What is REALLY holding your riding back?
What is it that determines our level of 'riding success?' ... That single most important riding asset or essential skill? 🐴🧐
So often riders come to me to help them look for answers and this is one of the first questions I ask them, because often as riders we are looking for answers, frustrated and stuck despite throwing literally everything that we have at the problem! It can be a heartbreaking, difficult and lonely struggle for some riders to make the progress that we are so looking for... and it can be as simple as us not understanding what is REALLY holding our riding back - because this way you are addressing the symptom and not the cause.
First up... If you think that it's a lack of ''assets that money can buy" that is holding you back from achieving your riding dreams - I'm here to tell you, you're looking for answers in all the wrong places!! 🎤
Chances are, if you are anything like I used to be... your most important and possibly under-utilised riding asset might be something different than what you think... 🤯
Your horse is your partner, so let's take him out of the 'asset' equation... Even though we know that his investment is, ahem... costly and ongoing! It's just a necessary life cost, like rent and groceries, right! Likewise, your most important riding asset is most certainly not your saddle, or even your riding surface... and even though my riding boots are some of my most favourite and treasured possessions (and don't get me started on how many pairs is too many pairs!!)... it's not them either. 👢👢
It's even more important than the holy grail of an independent seat and riding fitness but happily a little less elusive than good timing and feel.
Your most important riding asset is the very asset that drives and creates all of these things - it's you, but more specifically your BRAIN, and drilling down a bit further, your riding mindset!
So many riders will spend countless hours, and invest untold $$$ (untold because trust me, we are telling no-one!) on riding lessons, biomechanic sessions and even chiro and physio-therapies to improve their riding, as we work and strive to breakthrough to the next level of riding results.
But this approach is ignoring the very thing that BRINGS IT ALL TOGETHER, the most important aspect of anything that we do - investing in our riding MINDSET and how we think, feel and therefore act in the saddle.
Our riding brain determines the way that we solve problems and overcome challenges, it determines how we deal with disappointment, or create opportunities for us to learn, grow and move through and therefore on-and-up to the next level of results and rewards. ✨
It's the difference between someone really loving their riding journey and approaching it with fun, confidence and curiosity and someone who is afraid, dissatisfied and stuck going round and round in circles. It's the difference between someone who is succeeding despite all the odds against them - you know those inspiring riders who take home the prize on a no-brand name horse with no pedigree or even movement to speak of versus those who stay stuck for years despite the olympic-coach, imported 19h warmblood and the million dollar truck in the driveway...
Yep, I'm going to repeat this point: 🎤 If you think that it's a lack of ''assets that money can buy" that is holding you back from achieving your riding dreams - I'm here to tell you, you're looking for answers in all the wrong places!! 🎤
The difference between where you are now, and where you want to be lies in the things that you believe and the actions that you take.
If you've been stuck for a while in the same place, despite trying 'all-the-things' to improve - it's time to consider that it's your riding mindset that you need to invest in. It's how you think, and what you unconsciously believe that holds the key to unlock your potential for new results.
It's time to develop a growth mindset. A everything is possible if I know how mindset. A, I'm prepares to do what it takes, and show-up even when I really don't want to mindset. An insatiably curious, evergreen student mindset.
Because this asset, the real key to your riding success, will make you unstoppable! ✨ Want to know more about developing a killer mindset in your riding and life, get started here
Happy riding, Stef
